Exploding head syndrome
A generally painless sleep-transition event involving a sudden imagined bang, crash or flash of light.
Also known as: sleep start sound
What it means in practice
The event can be startling but does not mean the head has been physically harmed. Because it occurs around sleep onset or waking, it is sometimes mistaken for an astral projection sign.
