Sleep paralysis
A temporary inability to move at sleep onset or waking, sometimes accompanied by vivid sensory experiences or a sensed presence.
Also known as: REM atonia
What it means in practice
REM-related muscle inhibition persists while awareness is present. The state is usually brief but can be frightening.
Because deliberate projection methods approach the sleep-wake boundary, sleep paralysis and projection reports frequently overlap.
